Well there’s no avoiding it now. He knows the truth, at least the first part was over with. He knows Joel is his, later we’ll get to the explanation.
“Lorenzo?”
He wouldn’t look at me. We sat in silence until the doctor came in and checked Joel out.
“well, he has double ear infection”
“oh no, poor baby”
The doctor wrote something out.
“I’m going to write him two prescriptions. One is for ear drops. They are to be put in twice an hour until they’re gone. Next will be a high dose children’s aspirin, it will make him sleepy. At least he won’t have any pain. If he’s not feeling better by tomorrow afternoon, bring him back in”
“okay Doctor”
He tore off the prescription. I was about to take it when Lorenzo grabbed it from his hands.
“thank you Doctor”
“no problem. You can fill that in the pharmacy downstairs”
Lorenzo nodded. We got up and left the room. We went to the elevator and got on and went to the pharmacy and filled his prescription. When it was ready, Lorenzo paid for it.
“you don’t have to do that”
“yes I do”
He sounded mad. It was the first time he had actually talked to me since we had gotten here.
“I can pay you back”
“let’s just get him home”
He looked down at Joel. Joel was falling in asleep in my arms. He was exhausted from all the crying and pain. I followed Lorenzo to the car and got in.
“you’re going to want to get on 15 to get to my house”
“I know where you live”
He was so harsh. He started the car and he drove to the house. We got there and I carried Joel inside. Lorenzo followed and shut the door behind him. I sat down on the couch.
“can you hand me his medicine?”
He gave me the bag and I opened it up.
“get a glass of juice from the kitchen, so he can take his pill”
He walked into the kitchen and I put the drops in both ears. Joel woke up and started crying. Lorenzo rushed back with the glass.
“what’s wrong?”
“I just put the drops in. They dont feel too good”
I hushed Joel and held him to take his medicine. Lorenzo gave him the glass and he sipped it then handed it to me and snuggled into me. I hugged him tight and then carried him into his room. I laid him down softly and tucked him in. I sang his lullaby and he fell asleep. I turned on his night light and kissed his forehead. I slightly closed the door, so I could hear him. When I turned around there was Lorenzo standing a few inches away from me.
“is he sleeping?”
“yeah”
My heart was beating so fast. In an his arms were around my waist, mine went around his neck and we were pressed against each other. He leaned down and kissed me and I kissed him back. I kissed him with all my might. Scared to pull away and find it to be a dream.
