Re: Always Yours
2 years have gone by and not one word from him. I think about him everyday, wondering if he thinks about me. I know he doesn’t.
“Janine, keep moving”
“Sorry Mr. White”
I hated working here, but I had to pay the bills somehow. I pushed the cart down the aisles and continued to pick up the things people had left in the wrong places. I hated doing this, but that’s life right.
“Hey Janine, you have a phone call”
“Thanks Joy”
I went to customer service and picked up the phone.
“Hello”
“Hello Janine, I’m sorry to call you at work.”
“is something wrong?”
“Joel is running a fever”
“oh no”
“we need to come and pick him up”
“I will try to be there as soon as I can.”
I hung up and went to find my manager.
“Katie, I need to go home. Joel is running a fever and his daycare needs me to pick him up”
“Okay, that’s fine. Call if you can’t come in tomorrow”
“I will, thanks”
I loved Katie. She was very understanding when it came to Joel. I punched out and went to pick up Joel.
“hi baby”
He ran to me and hugged me tight. I kissed his forehead, he was burning up.
“how is he?”
“he’s been laying down since I called you. His fever hasn’t gone down at all”
“do you think I should take him to the emergency room?”
“I would see how he does at home first. Give him some children’s aspirin and if it isn’t gone by morning, than take him in”
“okay”
“he can’t come back until he’s been fever free for 24 hrs.”
“okay, thanks Lacy”
“hope he feels better”
I put his coat on and carried him out the car and buckled him in. I stopped at the store and got him some medicine and then took him home.
“momma, I tired”
“me too baby”
I gave him the medicine and tucked him in. I laid with him and watched him sleep. He looked just like his daddy, my little reminder of a love that once was. I kissed his forehead and left the room. I left his door a little open so I could hear him if he called. I changed and laid down on my bed. I stared at the ceiling until I fell asleep.
“Mommy, Mommy”
I woke up and looked at the clock. It was 3 in the morning. I jumped up and ran to his room.
“what’s wrong baby?”
“my tummy hurts”
“oh honey”
I took his temp and still no change. I decided to just take him to the emergency room. I changed my clothes and put his coat on and drove him to the hospital. They took us in and checked him out.
“is he allergic to anything?”
“not that I know of”
“Joel, can you remember if you ate anything that tasted funny?”
“ocolli”
I laughed.
“Joel, you eat broccoli all the time”
“it tastes yucky”
“did you anything white or green?”
“veggie squash. Lacy made it”
“what’s wrong with him?”
“he seems to be having a severe allergic reaction to squash”
“oh my”
“He’ll be okay though. I’m going to give him a shot of cortisone. He should be good to go by tomorrow”
“thank you so much”
“no problem. Just make sure, he doesn’t eat anything with squash or pumpkin, because he may end up hospitalized.”
“I will Doctor”
He left and a nurse came back with a shot. I held his hand while she gave it to him. He was a very brave little boy, so he didn’t cry when she gave it to him. She put a band aid and gave him some stickers and we left. He fell asleep on the way home. I put him to bed and laid down next to him.
