A masterfully written and wonderfully composed epic. Every page is used to create a marvelous experience with the author's vivid descriptions, that actually places the reader in the middle of the turmoil in 16th century Mexico. If you only read one book in your lifetime, make it "Aztec" by Gary Jennings.
No other book captures the mood of a culture and the spirit of the great Aztecs, or brings to life a people that seem to have been long forgotten by many. After reading "Aztec" you will never think of the Aztecs in quite the same way. Only by gaining an understanding of their beliefs, will we be able to determine the naturalness of their customs. A people that are generally thought of as savagely barbaric are shown to be compassionately gentle.
Gary Jennings is the master who creates the story about a Mexica boy who transforms from a commoner with a bleak future to one of the most important men in Tenochtitlán aristocracy. With a bitter life-long rivalry and a love affair, "Aztec" lacks nothing in substance. "Aztec" gives you what you want and wraps it around a beautifully informative and splendidly detailed story of a civilization that has been misunderstood for too long.
Gary jennings does nothing but talk shit about the Aztecs in that book. I've read it, what pure mierda. I can't believe you'd advocate this crap of a book.
I agree that this book doesn't talk ish about Aztecs. If anything it gives us a look at things from their perspective and talks through the opinions of the main character and he occasionally talks ish about the spaniards and their ways. I thought it was a good novel to what extent it is
historically/culturally correct I do not know.

co sign. best book i've ever read. it gave me a new sense of pride.
It was an ok book. There's many things I would've changed. I say about 50% accurate and sadly, one of the best fictional books about before the conquest. The sequels suck even more and have very little to no facts on history.

I have to agree with the sequels, they sucked ass.Aztec was fairly decent, fact being it is fiction. It was indeed a page turner.
On a realistic note though,I wonder what the outcome would've been if Tlacaelel were still alive upon the invaders arrival.
