Manu Chao's recently premiered "Politik Kills" music
video features Christian, an ex-child soldier roaming the war-torn streets
of his home of Monrovia, Liberia with a boom-box on his shoulder. The
video was shot in 2004 by French film-maker Jean-Stephane Sauvaire, only
one year after the end of the country's civil war. Christian took part in
the war by helping the government troops, led by the former president
Charles Taylor. Since he lives in the center of town, near
the U.S. embassy and the presidential mansion, Christian had
been at the heart of the fight. Christian is currently back living with
his family and attending school.
"For two days in December 2004, we walked throughout the
whole city, up and down, with me following Christian with the camera, and
him carrying the ghetto blaster. I had one assistant, an ex-child
soldier, nick-named "Hitler, The Killer" during the war, who was
protecting us," Jean-Stéphane explains. "That is how the 'Politik Kills'
video came about."
Manu Chao will be releasing the new 'Politik Kills' remix
EP in stores on June 3rd. It is already available at digital outlets. The
album is a reggae remix collection of the 'La Radiolina' album track by
artists like Prince Fatty, UK icons Linton Kwesi Johnson and Dennis Bovell
and Island Records founder Chris Blackwell (SEE FULL TRACK-LISTING
BELOW).
Manu Chao will also be performing several high-profile
dates later this summer: the Outside Lands Music Festival on August 22nd
in San Francisco and the Austin City Limits Music Festival on September
26th. Outside Lands' lineup includes other leading acts like Radiohead and
Tom Petty. Austin City Limits' lineup features rockers like the Mars
Volta, Foo Fighters and David Byrne. Several more Manu Chao U.S. dates
will be announced soon.
Fans can visit the new website,
www.PolitiKills.com,
to preview tracks from the remix EP as well as online-exclusive remixes
from artists like Nortec Collective's Bostich and Fussible. Fans and DJs
can also access PolitiKills.com to download the different parts of the
song and create their own remix. Finally, the site includes commentary
from social leaders, writers, artists and more; all in the name of
reflecting on the misuse and abuse of power plaguing the world.
The late 2007 studio release, 'La Radiolina', recently
won a Billboard Latin Music award in the "Best Latin Rock/Alternative
Album" category. This exciting news followed a highly-successful year
which featured the global star winning his first career Latin Grammy,
selling out large venues across the world and year-end critical acclaim
across most major media outlets including Time Magazine, Spin Magazine,
The New Yorker, and the Los Angeles Times.
