Chapter One: Beginning of the End ‘I never thought I fall for her like I did. I never thought she leave the way she did, I never thought I hear those words. They still echo in my head and I shiver every time. She was my only true love. I miss you baby.’
I seen her from far away, she had that beauty that it was almost too hurtful to look away. The way she sat, made everyone look at her, it wasn’t a slutty way were the girls sit with their ass all hang out, it was classy and almost seductive. I wanted her. The only thing was she never showed anyone any interest. Not the rich boys, the wannabe gangsters, nerds, hippies, yuppies, or the rockers. She was just coming to school and leaving, no one knew anything about her. This made me want her more.
“And that would be all class, you’re dismissed.” The professor said. I looked up and realize I had been staring at her for the last hour of class. Damn I hope she didn’t notice. I looked at the professor and nodded my head.
“Miguel,” I heard the professor calling my name. I turned around already losing her from my sight. “Yes?”
“What’s your major?”
“Business.” I replied looking at her weird.
“Do you know that well you’re a very good writer. You never thought of a career in Journalism?”
“Nah.” I said as she kept looking at me. I felt intimidated and wanted to leave so I would be able to catch the same bus as her.
“You should give it a second thought Miguel.”
“Umm okay.” I said but my mind wasn’t on that, I wanted to go already! “Is that all?”
“Yes.”
I hurried out the room and slid down the stairs to see if she was still at the bus stop. She was! My heart jumped in my chest and I took a couple deep breaths and stood next to her, she didn’t look up to see who stood next to her, she kept to herself and continued to read her book.
My mind was yelling at me, ‘Tell her hi! Say something!’
“What book is that?” I asked in a squeaky voice. ‘Great’ I thought.
That’s when she looked up, again I had to catch my breath she was beautiful without compare. I must have had sweat drops coming down my forehead she just looked at me if I was crazy. She sighed and looked back down to the book and showed the title. ‘The Pact’ by Judi Picoult. She continued to read and I remained in silent.
I turn and look for the bus, still wasn’t here. I turned back to her. “What’s the book about?”
“Look it up.” I heard her soft voice tell me.
I was to amaze that she even spoke to me I stayed quiet. Till my mind recollected what she had told me, “Yeah, yeah maybe I will.”
We stood there again in silence. The bus finally came and I let her go in front of me, she paid then I did. There were no seats available so awkwardly enough, I had to stand next to her. The last customer got on and bus abruptly took off making me almost fall over on top of her.
“I’m so sorry!” I said after regaining my balance.
She smiled, “Its fine, maybe you should hold on!” She said.
I smiled! She smiled at me! I did that! She spoke again to me! This time not in disgust! I smiled so much it almost hurt my cheeks. We didn’t say anything else after that.
“Kilbourn.” the bus announced the next stop. That was her stop. I looked down to her and she looked up from her book and smiled again. “Doors opening.” She put her book in her bag and walked out the bus. My heart ache a little as she walked away.
‘I’ll see her next time right?’ I thought to myself. My stop came a short while after and I hop off. I walked the same streets I’ve walked for the past 23 years; I grew up here, in mi barrio. It wasn’t bad till this year, where all the little kids that use to play tag and hide n seek started gang banging and selling narcotics on the corners. They didn’t bother me though they knew better. I walked into my house smelling weed and liquor.
“Chris I’m home!” I yelled for my little brother.
“That’s cool.” I heard him yell from his room.
“Put that shit out guey!”
“Hold up, I’m almost finished.”
I walked up the stairs and open his door I was hit with a cloud of smoke. There were at least five people in his room laid out on the floor.
“Come on foo! Put that shit out and open a window before mom gets home.”
“Fine, Hey Julio open the window yeah?” He told one of his friends. I walked out and went into the kitchen to make something to eat. Her smile was still imprinted in my mind.
I could still smell that shit, so I went upstairs with some Febreze and started spraying.
“Oh come on bro, don’t be spraying that girl shit around here!” Chris said waving the spray out his face.
“Andale quey! You know moms don’t like this shit, and I don’t want her bitching, dile tu friends’ que ya!” I yelled.
“Fuck!” Chris looked around and motion his head to the door; they all stood up and walked out the room and the house. “I’ll call ya’ll later.”
“Cool.”
I looked at Chris his eyes were lowered and he was barely looking at me. “Sup.”
“Sober up nigga.” I said tossing him the Febreze.
I walked back down and finished the Huevo con Chorizo.
“Mijos?”
I heard my mom come in the front, ‘Fuck I hope Chris got that smell out.’
“Que chingados! Who was smoking in my house!?”
‘Fuck!’
“Miguel?”
“Not me mama!”
“Chris?”
He didn’t answer. I heard her go up the stairs, ‘Damn! I told him!’ I waited to hear the screams.
“Christopher Dominik!” And they were off, I snickered to myself. “Por que chingados estas fumando! What you wanna be more fucking stupid! Oh my god! Do you know what this shit does to you, estupid! Aye dios mio, que voy hacer, no quieres ir ala eschuela no quieres trabajar! No mas quieres esta smoking this shit! Sabes que! I’ve had enough!” I heard her walk across the hallway and into her room. I looked up the stairway and seen my little brother stand at his door looking for our mom, his eyes were somewhat open. We both heard her come out her room and my mouth drop open she took out the belt. My little brother ran back into the room. I was dying of laughter, I sat on the sofa laughing and as I heard my little brother screaming for my mom to stop. “Smoke again cabron!” I heard her walking down the stairs and I tried to stop laughing.
“E tu!” I felt a smack on the back of my head.
I laughed and turned around, “Que? Yo que?”
“Por que you no stop your brother from smoking menso!”
“That’s his life! I just came home from school.”
“You should watch after your brother! He’s only 15 and you 23 you need to watch out for him.”
“Yah okay mom.”
I got up from the couch and went to the kitchen to eat. My mom went into her room to rest and my brother finally came down.
“Man Mig, why didn’t you cover for me?”
“Dude, are you dumb? Is that shit getting to you already?”
“Man.”
“Does your ass hurt?” I said laughing.
“Fuck you.”
He looked at my unfinished plate.
“Are you hungry?”
“A little.” He said looking away.
I sighed and gave him my plate. “Go ahead.”
I stood up and stretched. My finger tips almost touched the ceiling. Me being 6’3 didn’t help when we lived in a small house. I walked up the stairs to my room and closed the door. My stereo had my favorite classics on. Her smile stayed on my mind, the smell of her body was still in fumed in my nose and all I wanted was her here with me.
I woke up the next day refreshed and ready to start my day. But it was a Saturday, no classes which meant no her. ‘Ugh.’
“Yo were you at nigga!” I heard him screaming from the hallway. “Oh hello senora perdon, es que I didn’t know you were home, and you know, Chris let me in e…”
“I’m in here fool!” I yelled out.
“Sorry again.” I heard him say before I saw him walk in my room. “Whassup nigga!”
“Damn dude you’re so fucking loud!”
“It’s the black in me, what can I say?”
“Marco, you’re not even fucking black bro!”
“Yeah I am I’m down with the brothas,” He lifted his fist in the air, “black panthers guey!”
“Tell me Marco how you black?”
“My daddy’s momma!” Marco said nodding his head.
“Oh hell nah.” I started laughing, “You’re a trip.”
“Hey foo,” He sat down at my computer and turned it on, “There’s this bomb ass ride down the street from you, a Yukon, You know how much Louie would want for a ride like that?”
“I don’t know how much?” I said walking to my closet.
“About 8000.”
“Yeah?” I said looking at him.
“Yeah, betcha that pay a lot of them school loans huh?”
“Hell yeah.”
“Tonight then?”
“Fa sho.” I said, taking out my black hoody and my Super Jimmy to unlock the car doors.
The night time came and we walked down the block quickly.
“So what foo, you wanna take this or me?” I asked
“I got this.” Marco said taking the rod out my hands and walking to the driver’s side and inserted the rod while I kept look out.
“Okay its open!” Marco got in and hot wire the car and it started, I jumped in the passenger and we drove off, with no one looking, we got on the expressway and went to the north side of Chicago. We drove up to Louie garage and honk the horn.
“Who is it?” We heard them scream form inside the garage.
“Miguel and Marco!” I screamed.
“Open up muthafuckas!” Marco screamed.
“Callate guey!” I smacked Marco on the back of his head; he knew these fools aren’t the type to play around.
The garage door open and Marco drove in. Louie looked down from his upstairs office I nodded to him and he nodded back. He got up and came downstairs to meet us.
“I'll give you 8500…”
“Cool.” I said getting ready to take the money.
“9000!” Marco said.
“8000!” Louie said looking at Marco.
“Nah, Louie its cool 8500 that’s cool.”
“Better watch your partner.” Louie said giving me a stern look. I look over to Marco, who just shrugged his shoulders, ‘fucking Marco.’ I thought to myself.
We walked out the garage and walked to a main street to catch a taxi.
“Man dude, I keep telling you not to fuck with Louie like that!” I said to Marco.
“It's just that muthafucka thinks he has everyone under his thumb and you know I don’t like that shit.” Marco said as he whistled for a cab.
“Still nigga, that’s our boss, you never heard of the saying ‘Don’t bite the hand that feeds you!’” I said as we jumped into the cab.
“Shit we're making him his money you know how much he probably gets for those cars! Probably double we get!”
I shut up then, I knew he was right, but at this time and age all I cared about was getting money and I didn’t care how much I got as long as it was enough to help my family and have money in my wallet. The ride home was quiet, we decided to get off at the corner of the block to go into the store and buy some cases of beer. It was a night to celebrate.
I got home with two cases of Coronas and Modelos. My mom wasn’t home, it was Saturday so that meant she was with my Tia Nacha, Chris was home playing Xbox.
“That’s what’s up!” He said putting down the remote and coming to the kitchen with us.
I laughed, “And who said you were getting any?”
“You wouldn’t do me bogus like that right?”
“I sure would.”
“That’s how you feel?” He said eyeing the Coronas and looking back to me.
I looked at Marco who was taking out the Patron bottle and Hypnotic, while talking on his cell phone.
“Yeah girl, why don’t you get some of your friends and come thru to my boys crib, well all get along here.”
I looked back at Chris. “I’ll let you drink with us on one circumstance.”
“What?”
“No smoking the rest of the week.”
“Fuck!”
“I mean it Chris.”
“Yeah girl, We got liquor and well, you know how I get down, PLUS baby girl you get the privilege to see me. I’ll even let you touch!”
“Okay, yeah, yeah I won’t smoke.” He agreed.
“Okay baby girl, Here’s the address, 4209 S. Sacramento. You better come a, seriously. I don’t want you lying to me telling me que vas a venir e then you don’t come girl! Hey but for real your finna come? You finna bring some of your girls too?”
Chris was listening to the conversation while I sat back and open a Corona. I laughed as the two idiots high five each other, I didn’t care about who ever came over, my mind went straight to her. I visualize her sitting the way she had sat in the class room, her legs crossed, her hand on her forehead as if hiding from the world. The way her lips move as she read to herself, how her eyelashes were long and moved every time she blinked.
“Hey bitch!” Marco yelled at me. I looked up and threw him a Corona.
“What?” I asked.
“You ready to get your knob slob!”
“Your disgusting!” I said shaking my head.
“Shit I am!” Chris said.
“Chill out fool you don’t even have a knob to slob!” Marco said laughing. I joined in. The girls came and well, I don’t remember much after that.
