There she was again, sitting there like she had sat the other day. I took a deep breath and sat next to her.
“Hi!” I said.
“Hhmm.” She said.
We sat there in silence waiting for the teacher to show up.
“Crazy weather huh?”
She sat there reading her book in silence. She didn’t even respond back.
“Yeah I think so; it was warm over the weekend, now its chilly outside.”
Again she sat in silence.
“I had a good weekend you know hang out with the family and just chill and you?”
She was killing me with not answering me.
“Good morning class.” The teacher said walking in. I stayed silent again. She wasn’t very welcoming to talk to. We went on with the class. I actually liked English class. It must be my favorite subject.
“Miguel, what do you think of the book?”
“It’s interesting.” Honestly I wasn’t paying attention to what book she was talking about, I was interested in her hand moved as she took notes.
“What about the book is interesting?” The professor asked.
“You know the main characters and what not.” Damn I had to catch up, what book she was talking about.
“I think what he’s trying to say is that he finds it heroic of how the main character stand up and fights for his damsel in distress. While the damsel in distress ends up saving him in the end.” She said looking up from her notes.
“Very well put Layloni,”
‘Layloni,’I thought to myself. Damn that’s a beautiful name.
“Thanks.” I whispered.
“Maybe you should stop focusing on me, and focus on the class.” She whispered back.
I must have had a shock face because she giggled. I shook my head and smiled. “I can’t help it.” I said.
“Well try to.” She said looking at me again. I just dazed off into her eyes. They look so brown mixed with honey, I got lost. “Snap out of it!” She told me.
“Uhhuh.” I said taking a gulp out of my saliva. What was wrong with me? Why did I have feelings for this woman! “Can we have coffee?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because then you’ll just think its something else and I aint trying to look for someone.”
“What! Not even, I just want to get to know you.”
“Why?”
“Because you seem interesting.”
“How so?”
“Just the way you’re so cold to everyone.”
“But yet you want to have coffee with me?”
“Uh yeah.”
She stared at me, and immediately I felt intimidated. I couldn’t help but to look away and back at her.
“Fine, but then will you leave me alone.”
“Probably not.”
“Ugh.”
I smiled and went back to watching her, again not paying attention to the class discussion.
“You’re dismissed.” The professor said.
She looked at me and I smiled again.
“Well, where to?”
“Depend do you like Dunkin’ Donuts or Starbucks?”
“Dunkin Donuts.”
“Okay.” I walked next to her down the street to the local Dunkin’ Donuts. She wasn’t be very talkative. “So…” I said.
“Yeah…”
“Do you like the teach?”
“Yeah she’s alright.”
“yeah she’s cool.”
We got to the local Dunkin’ Donuts and walk in, she ordered and paid for her own, I tried to pay for her but she wouldn’t let me. I ordered and sat down across from her, she was taking careful sips of her hot coffee.
“You know, this doesn’t mean anything right?”
I looked up from stirring my coffee. “What do you mean?”
“Just cause I’m here talking to you and drinking coffee doesn’t mean you’re going to get any.”
“Chill out girl, like I said I just want to get to know you.”
“Right.” She said looking around
“So what’s your major?”
“I don’t have one.”
“What?”
“Yeah I don’t have one.”
“Why?”
“Don’t know, I’m just getting my general education courses.”
“Oh, I’m a business major.”
“What do you plan on doing with that degree?”
“I don’t know, look for a business job?”
“So you wouldn’t open up your own shop?”
“Umm well nah, I wouldn’t know what to sell, you know.”
“Hhmm.” She said taking a sip of her coffee and looking around.
“The teacher said I should be a Journalist major.”
“Yeah I’ve read one of your short stories.”
My coffee almost slip from my hand. “What?”
She laughed at my reaction, “Yeah, I was actually helping her grade papers for community service and well, I started reading yours and well, it was really good.” She looked down and drank her coffee.
“So you think I’m a good writer.”
“Yeah.”
“Aww shucks.”
“Oh lord.” She said laughing. Then she stopped abruptly and finished up her coffee, “I gotta go, bye.” She got up and left not even letting me say goodbye.
I threw away the half-empty cup and left. I kept thinking about her laugh, ‘man, why did she leave like that?’ I took the bus home still thinking about her.
“Oye Migs!”
I rolled my eyes, I hated hearing her voice. I turned around and stood infront of my ex, “Katrina, what do you want?”
“Aye papi, why you gotta be so cruwell for eh?” She said trying to caress my face.
I moved from the reach of her hand, “What do you want?” I asked again.
“I heard from Raquel that she seen you talking to some bitch!”
“Don’t you fucking call her that ever again!” I yelled at her.
“Who is that bitch!”
I grabbed her by her arm and pushed her away from me, “I told you not to call her that! And what it don’t matter to you, who I’m talking to okay!”
She started giggling, “Mmm, you know how I like it ruff daddy.”
“Damn you’re a fucking slut Katrina.” I looked at her up and down and continue my walk.
“You’ll come back to me, just watch pa.”
“Shut the fuck up!” I said continuing my walk.
I got to my house and open the door, nobody was home. I went upstairs and turned on my stereo and let Etta James run through the speakers.
