Chapter Five: First Date

My heart was pounding as I stood in front of her apartment, I went to the door and looked for her last name, Ramirez. I seen it and pushed the button. A buzz noise sounded.

“Bueno? Who’s there?” An older woman’s voice yelled.
“Hi, I’m looking for Layloni?”
“And who’s this?”
“Miguel.”
“Oh tu eres el muchacho coming to take her out?”
“Si senora”
“Uhhuh, one second please.”

I waited for the door to let me get buzzed in but it took a while.

“Miguel?”
“Yeah?” I said shock that her mom didn’t let me in.
“Sorry, my mom doesn’t know how to work the door. I’m in apartment 2b.”
“Okay.”

I heard the buzz and open the door. I made my way up the stairs and knocked on the wooden door that had the 2b sticker.

I took deep breaths as I heard the doors unlock. The door swung open and it wasn’t her. It was a lady in her mid-thirties.

“And you?”
“Hi, I’m here for Layloni?”
“For what?”
“To take her out on a date?”
“For what?”
“So I can get to know her.”
“You wanna get to know her or fuck her?”
“No! I want to get o know her!”
“What she aint good enough for you to Fuck?”
“NO! Its-“
“So what you do wanna fuck my neice!”

“TIA!” I heard her voice yell, I looked over the ladies shoulder and see her coming to the door. She was wearing a beautiful long yellow summer dress. Her hair was down it swayed down her back and her face look like an angel as she smiled.

“Que?”
“Can you let MY guest in?”
“No.”
“Tia!”
She turned to look at me. “Well you going to come in or que?”
“No I’m coming, I’m sorry.” I walked in and looked around, the baby shower was still going on.

“Hi!” She came up to me and smiled.
“Hey.” I said still looking around.
“Are those for me?” She asked point to the white roses I had in my hand.
“Um no.”
“NO?”
“Nah.”
“Who for then?”
“Your mom.”

I looked for an older lady who looked like her but didn’t see anyone.

“My mom?” She said smiling.
“Yeah.””
“Okay. MOM!” She yelled out, when she did that, all the ladies at the baby shower looked up and looked at me, her mom got up from the couch and walked over to us.

“Si?”
“Estos para uste senora.” I handed her the roses and smiled.
“Para mi?”
“Si.”
“Why?”
“Just because I’m so thankful.”
“For what?”
“That you had your daughter.”

“AAWWWW” The room was full of them.

“Oh my goodness.” The mom said smelling the flowers.

Layloni face was full of shock and I smiled.

“This is for you.” I finally told her, I took a book out of my pocket.
She took it from me and read the title out loud “Say Goodnight Gracie.” She looked up and smiled.
“Do you like it?”
“How did you know I like this book?”
“I didn’t but I figured if you like the book ‘The Pact’ you like this one? Wait you’ve read this one?”
“Yeah, but I love it thank you!” She gave me a hug and I held her tight. Her small frame fit perfect with mine. For a split second everything felt right with the world.

“AWWWW” I head again. She pulled away and laughed.

“Let me introduce you to everyone.” She grabbed my hand. I swear I got all tingly but I didn’t pull away. She introduce me to her cousin, her aunts, nieces, sisters and her dad. I shook his hand while he tried to kill me with his stern hard look.

“Okay let me get my sweater.” She said leaving her dad and me alone.

‘Great’ I thought.

“What’s your name?”
“Miguel sir.”

And that was all. She came back to me and we walked out saying bye to everyone.

“So where do you want to eat?”
“I want pizza!” She said buckling her belt.
“Okay pizza it is.” I drove us to the restaurant everyone loved. ‘Giordanos’
“I love this place!”
I smiled.

We got seated at a booth and waited for the waiter.

“So not to push my luck but why did you say yes for tonight?”
“Because I realize your not just trying to hit it and quit it.”
“Of courses not!

She smiled and I smiled, it was contagious. They took our order and we ate.

She smiled as she ate the pizza, “I love pizza!” She said in a little dance moving her head side to side.

I giggled a little and she looked up.

“What?” She asked.
“Its just, I never seen anyone get so happy for pizza.”
“Well, its just with my parents they dont really let me eat pizza.”
“Why?”
“Its not healty for you.”
“Sure it is!”
“That’s what I tell them!”
“You got your vegatables,” I said pointing to the topping of pizza, “You got your dairy!” I said pointing to the cheese. “And you got your bread!” I said bitting into the piece.
She stared at me and bit into hers, “Your absolutely right.” She said after she swallowed her piece.

We talked the rest of the night, well I did mostly. She asked many question and I answered. I didn’t mind though. She mostly asked the generals. Where I was born? If I was the only kid, when I told her about Chris and his antics she laughed really hard.

“So his foot was stuck in the toilet?” She asked .
“Yeah. He thought if he stuck his foot in the toilet the drain would get unclogged and it didn’t and his foot got stuck.”
“Wait why was the toilet clogged anyways?”
“Well, my little brother is into narcotics, and well the cops came to investigate he flushed it down the toilet.”
“Wow.” She took a sip of her Coke. “Are you into those things?”
“What things?” I said bitting into my sixth piece.
“Drugs?”
“Oh no! I can’t stand the smell.”
“Good.” She said taking another sip.

I looked at the pizza, two slices were still there from our x-large. “What happen? Can’t hang with the Pizza king?”
“Shut up dork!” She said laughing. “I’m full.” She said stretching.

I didn’t want the date to be over, I wanted to do something more. But I could tell she was edging to go home. I paid, even thought she wanted to split the bill this time I didn’t let her. She got into my car and we drove away from the restaurant.

She seem more comfortable with me, and I was pleased. She leaned in and played with the radio stations. She finally got to my favorite one, the oldies channel. “Always and Forever” was playing by Heatwave. This song was my favorite song.

She sang the words and I joined in on the second verse.

“you know this song?”
“I love this song!” I told her.

Again she smiled, she had been doing a lot of that lately and everytime it still amazed me, her pearly white teeth how her dimples creased in. I drove her back home and we sat in the running car.

“well I had a great time.” I said smiling.
She laughed. “Me to.”
“Maybe we can go out Wednesday when we don’t have class?”
She paused for a second, “yeah that sounds great.”

I went in for a kiss, I knew I was way over my head and of course she reject it. “Bye carino” She said as she gave me a hug instead. I smiled and she walked out the car and into her apartment complex. Before turning around and waving goodbye.

“Wow.” I whispered putting the car in drive and going home.
