Default Is it time to legalize it?

I have the firm belief that keeping the Cannabis plant criminalized hinders economic growth here in the united states. Whatever your personal reservations are on the subject of Cannabis cultivation, one thing is painfully obvious. That the criminalization of the Cannabis plant has put a lot of rather innocent people in the corporate prisons this country can't seem to get enough of.

I honestly can't see why Cannabis should remain illegal. I also do not buy the officially declared circumstances that criminalized the Cannabis plant in the first place.

If legalized, Cannabis will easily become america's #1 cash crop, creating a whole new plethora of clean and efficient textile industries, food services, medical practices and so much more.

Don't believe me?

Cannabis can easily replace cotton as our #1 source of clothing. It can grow anywhere, with less pesticides and less land.

Cannabis can easily and efficiently replace wood pulp as our #1 source of paper (the declaration of independence was written on Cannabis paper)

Cannabis seeds can easily provide dietary nutrients needed in everyday life.

Cannabis can create biofuels and biodegradable plastics.

So what are some of your opinions?

Is legalization as dangerous as the anti-Marijuana/Hemp movement claim to be?

It's a good argument you put out, but of course, there is a Pro and a Con in this scenario, if you were to make it legal imagine the chaos and danger from being intoxicated, what are they going to do: sell the plant like if it were Tabacco? Many teenagers would now feel more bravery to consume it do to it being legal...

i still dont see how alcohol and tobacco are legal and weed isnt. alcohol fucks you up way worst than weed, ciggarettes murder you, weed basically just relieves stress while letting you still be able to function.
make it legal.... there are worst people out there than people who are just smokin a little weed that the law should be worried about....

This argument is probably the most pervasive when it comes to the subject of Marijuana decriminalization. There's many counter points to this, but first we must examine how detrimental the effects of Cannabis are on humans. Let's take the Netherlands for example, in Amsterdam, Marijuana is largely tolerated and in some areas, it's completely legal to consume. Given this fact, why is it that the number of native Cannabis users in Amsterdam is lower than that of the US, where it is illegal?

I honestly think this is an educationl issue. Take Spain for example where the legal drinking age is 16. In that country, preventative education comes in the form of teaching respect for the effects of alcohol as opposed to the US's "make it taboo" stance. Same goes for marijuana here, if legalized, you might have a point because maybe, just maybe, american teenagers aren't ready to have legalized Marijuana due to their poor understanding of it's effects on the body, and society. To be honest though, I agree that the level of marijuana users will rise in the US if legalized, but I don't see that as a bad thing at all, since regulation is a better way of keeping controlled substances out of the hands of children (weed is easier to score than alcohol).

I also don't believe MJ will cause any chaos of any sort, I think the effects on society will be the opposite. This of course is open to debate.

I find that my sentiments are aligned with yours. There are many studies that show how much more dangerous the legal intoxicants like Cigs and Alcohol are compared to the minimal effects of Marijuana.

Take this scenario for example. Would a husband be more likely to beat his wife if he's high, or drunk?

Oh and by the way. 3 recent studies have concluded that there are no cancer links from Cannabis, one of the studies intentions was to prove that there is a link...they found none.

alcohol has killed far more people than marijuana will, who's victim number is zero. I was thinking the other day.....it's the way the government has got people to view these things.

Like alcohol.......if someone abuses it and they end up being an alcoholic, they view the person as an alcoholic, weak and unable to control themselves. It's never, "alcohol is evil".But if they see a pot-smoker, they think about the pot first, then the person. Do you agree with that? Or what would be correct?

This is a great documentary of the true history of Marijuana criminalization. It's in 10 parts, so I suggest watching part 1, then click on the youtube menu and go on to part 2, 3, etc.

It's a pretty in depth doc. narrated by Woody Harrelson.

You'll learn the role that racism, self and corporate interests had in the criminalization of the Cannabis plant.

Epion

Your perspective is myopic.

Because you only see it from a USA point of view.

What about all the indigenas and others put into virtual slave labor to provide you your induced reality.

The chances of you getting it legalized in Mexico, Columbia and other purveyors is a pipe dream.

Ask A Chicano. (Tejano I presume, by your constant use of the word myopic.)

When was the last time you went to Mexico? I went September of 07 to 3 different states,(2 in the north, and 1 in the south) and my belief that the criminalization of marijuana actually produces a nasty black market has been solidified further as a witness to the general attitudes native Mexicans have towards Marijuana.

No one down there views Marijuana as an extreme taboo the way it is viewed here in the states, and it grows pretty wildly in the mountains of Durango and Coahuila, I should know, I personally dried some of it and smoked it myself (and it sucked ).

I have to say that your argument is seriously flawed because you don't take into account the effects of decriminalization on a society. You simply see it as a "pipe dream" but never make any statements that legalization is a good or bad thing (depending on your opinion), and you only mention indigena oppression but completely ignore why that is so. Thus making your statement a rather pointless one in the context of this thread.

Like I said, the legalization of MJ will do more good to Mexico's damaged economy than bad. In fact, keeping it illegal gives production power to criminals instead of local entrepeneurs who could easily use hemp (no THC) for various industrial uses that will benefit their local economy and environment. Also many of the indigenas you attempt to defend, smoke cannabis themselves, they enjoy it......a lot, trust me on this one. Down in Puebla, I was stoned most of the time, yet productive...imagine that?

Look up hemp, a variation of the Cannabis plant, and you'll notice that it's benefits outweight the social impacts of decriminalization.

There is absolutely no reason for it to be illegal. The number one reason would be that I as an individual have every right to consume whatever substance I feel like, it's my body, not yours, period.

C-mon man, drop your misconceived prejudices on the plant and see it for what it is already. Watch the documentary I posted a few posts up. I honestly see no reason why you must continue to protect drug dealers and their black market, because that is all you are doing. The dealers don't want it to be legal as much as the chemical and paper companies do, they both bank off the criminalization of Cannabis, and you damn well know this. Instead, why not empower the people who could cultivate it for the general good, and a government who can oversee regulation, as to stop the chaos.

Remember, this thread is about legalization and it's effect on society, stay on topic.
