i always found this topic to be very interesting in my studies. What do u consider urself? Chicano, Mexican, American. Or do u prefer the panamerican terms like Latino, Hispanic?
Whats ur choice, and why?
I chose to go with Mexican. i grew up in Nogales, az right next to the border and it was never an issue. the population in that area is, naturally, 99.9% Mexicanos and the idea of being anything other then Mexican was never present. there are so many labels for us today. Im not a fan of terms like Latino and Hispanic cuz it s too broad. i dont have a problem with our Puerto Rican and Cuban counterparts, but we are all very different ppl. to say there is no cultural differences between a Dominican and a Mexican is like saying there is nothing different between a black person and a white person.
Chicano. I used to go by Mexican but I have no recent ancestors from the current day Mexican state and I got tried of having to explain to folks were in Mexico my relatives are from. Another benefit of Chicano is that it's radical intonation tends to anger or shock conservatives, especially white right-wingers.
